Have you ever wondered how our professional line markers achieve perfect 90° angles when creating parking bays, lorry bays or walkways? It might seem like a complex task, but it’s actually a straightforward process that relies on a clever geometric concept known as the “3, 4, 5 technique”.

In this article, we’ll uncover this technique to show you step-by-step how our experts create the perfect line marking. By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of how to create precise right angles with ease.

The 3, 4, 5 Technique

To achieve those crisp, 90° angles, we use a geometric method called the 3, 4, 5. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Establish the Datum Edge

We start by creating a single straight line which serves as our reference point. This straight line is commonly known as the “datum edge”, and it’s formed by stretching a string line between any two points. The great thing about this method is that the location of these two points doesn’t matter – connecting them with a string line will automatically create a perfectly straight edge.

Step 2: Measure and Mark

Now that we have the datum edge in place, we mark and measure the ground to form the right angle. From one end of the datum edge, we measure the distance of 4 metres and make a mark on the ground. Using a tape measure or piece of chalk, we then create a 3 metre arc starting from the same initial point. This arc is extended roughly towards where we expect the 90° angle to be.

Step 3: Verify the 90° Angle

To ensure we have the perfect 90° angle, we measure the distance from the 4 metre mark on the ground to the point where the 3 metre arc intersects the datum edge. What we’re looking for is precisely 5 metres between these two points.

Step 4: String-Line and Perfect Angles

With our three points established on the ground, all that’s left to do is string-line between them. This step connects the dots, quite literally, and results in a perfectly angled parking bay, lorry bay or walkway.
