MOT Bay Line Markings Services

MOT bay line markings play a critical role in how a testing station functions. They define testing zones and provide clear visual guidance for vehicle positioning during inspection. Whether a workshop operates a single Class 4 lane or a multi-bay testing facility handling both passenger and commercial vehicles, the layout must support efficient operations while remaining aligned with current DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) requirements.

The DVSA sets the standards for how an MOT bay should be laid out. At Line-Mark, we install MOT bay floor markings that are designed around these requirements, helping you maintain an inspection-ready testing environment. With well-maintained MOT bay markings, you can prevent unnecessary delays or remedial work, allowing your testing station to continue operating with minimal disruption.

We approach MOT bay floor markings as a structured system tailored to your workshop’s specific dimensions and operational requirements. Rather than simply painting lines onto a floor, we assess how the bay functions, where vehicles enter and exit, how technicians move through the workspace and how testing equipment interacts with surrounding areas.

Our professional team plans layouts depending on the MOT class being undertaken. For Class 4 bays, we create defined clearance around testing equipment and work areas. In contrast, for Class 7 facilities, we build larger positioning zones for commercial vehicles with longer wheelbases and heavier traffic loads. Using precise measurements, durable materials, specialist tools and professional installation methods, we at Line-Mark deliver MOT bay line markings designed to support daily operations and ongoing compliance requirements.

Be it brake tester surrounds or headlamp alignment zones, inspection pits, DVSA-specified chevron markings or keep-clear areas, we deliver layouts that promote safe working practices, support efficient vehicle movement and maintain a professional appearance for customers, technicians and inspectors alike.

Customised Workshop Layouts for Multi-Class MOT Stations

No two workshops operate in the same way, as differences in floor space, equipment positioning, access routes and workshop traffic flow mean that MOT bay marking must be tailored to each facility. Before any installation begins, our team assesses the existing layout to understand how the workshop functions and how testing activities interact with servicing, repairs and vehicle movement throughout the building.

Class 4 Testing Bays

Class 4 MOT stations typically focus on passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles. These environments require precise floor markings around lifts, brake testers and headlamp alignment zones to ensure vehicles can be positioned consistently throughout the testing process.

Our layout helps maintain clear working areas while supporting efficient movement between testing equipment and technician workspaces.

Class 7 Testing Bays

Class 7 MOT stations operate under more demanding conditions. Longer wheelbases, heavier axle loads and large vehicles require extended layouts capable of handling increased operational stress.

For these facilities, we install heavy-duty MOT bay floor markings tailored to commercial vehicle testing equipment and the broader space requirements of larger vehicles.

Multi-Bay Independent Garages

Independent garages often combine MOT testing with servicing, tyre fitting and diagnostic work. In these environments, MOT lanes must integrate safely with surrounding workshop activities without creating unnecessary congestion or operational conflicts.

We ensure layouts establish clear visual separation between testing activities and other workshop functions, so that technicians can work efficiently while maintaining safe traffic flow throughout the building.

Main Dealer Workshops

Manufacturer workshops require MOT bay markings that maintain a professional, high-quality appearance while supporting strict operational standards.

We install a high-contrast layout that complements the overall workshop environment while remaining aligned with MOT testing requirements and internal safety procedures.

Markings Built for Safety and DVSA Compliance

The primary purpose of MOT bay line marking is to create clear operational boundaries that support safe and consistent testing procedures.

At Line-Mark, every MOT bay layout is designed around the current operational requirements of the testing environment. This includes defining headlamp alignment zones, brake tester areas, inspection pits, vehicle positioning guides and safety clearance zones throughout the bay. In these areas, clear floor markings reduce uncertainty during testing activities by helping technicians understand where vehicles should be positioned and where equipment or tools should be kept clear.

This becomes further crucial in busy workshops where multiple activities may be taking place simultaneously.

High-visibility colours such as white and yellow are commonly used to improve visibility and distinguish between different operational areas. Safety hatching, exclusion zones and keep-clear markings can also be incorporated where additional visual guidance is required.

The result is a workshop layout that promotes safer working practices, improves organisation and supports the operational requirements of MOT testing facilities.

ArmourLine® Application System for Heavy Duty Garage Environments

Workshop floors experience some of the harshest conditions found in any commercial environment. Heavy vehicle movements, steel-wheeled equipment, hydraulic jacks, brake dust, oils, fuels and cleaning chemicals all place significant stress on floor-marking systems.

Without proper preparation, even a high-quality coating can fail prematurely. For this reason, all MOT bay line-marking projects are installed using our ArmourLine® application system.

The process begins with detailed surface preparation designed to create the ideal substrate for long-term adhesion. Depending on floor conditions, this may include captive shot blasting, mechanical grinding, degreasing and contamination removal. These processes remove weak surface material and create the mechanical profile required for reliable coating performance.

Once preparation is complete, we apply high-performance marking systems selected based on workshop usage, traffic levels and operational requirements. In many MOT environments, MMA resin systems or epoxy systems are used because they provide excellent durability, chemical resistance and rapid curing.

The result is a highly durable floor-marking system that remains visible and functional despite constant exposure to heavy workshop activity.

SuperLine® Extended Warranty Options for MOT Bay Markings

Workshop markings naturally experience wear in the due course. Vehicle movements, tyre scrubbing, equipment impacts and cleaning programmes can gradually affect visibility, particularly in high-traffic testing lanes. Our SuperLine® extended warranty and maintenance programme is designed to help preserve the condition and performance of MOT bay floor markings over the long term.

The programme includes ongoing support, condition assessment and maintenance recommendations designed to address damage before it develops into a larger issue. Regular cleaning guidance and visibility checks help remove grease, carbon deposits and workshop contamination that can reduce the effectiveness of floor markings.

By proactively maintaining the layout, workshops can often extend the lifespan of their markings while reducing the need for major relining projects.

Our MOT Bay Line Marking Installation Process

1. Pre-Site Blueprinting

Our work begins with assessing DVSA documentation, reviewing workshop dimensions and verifying the proposed layout against the intended MOT class requirements.

2. Surface Decontamination

Oil contamination, worn coating, rubber build-up and other surface defects are removed using specialist preparation techniques to create a clean, durable surface for line marking.

3. Precision Layout and Application

Using precise measuring equipment, we accurately set out and apply markings around brake testers, vehicle lifts, inspection pits and designated testing zones using materials suited to busy workshop environments.

4. Compliance Validation

Before handover, we carry out a thorough inspection to ensure all markings are accurate, clearly visible, durable and finished to a high standard.

Installation That Works Around Your Garage Operations

Every hour an MOT bay is unavailable can affect workshop productivity and revenue. For this reason, our installation programme is planned around your business’ operational needs.

Where appropriate, rapid-cure MMA resin systems, epoxy coatings or other specialist resin-based line-marking systems can be used to minimise downtime and allow vehicle traffic to return to the areas within hours. We also offer flexible scheduling options, including evening, early-morning and weekend installations. This approach may be scheduled to occur outside peak operating hours, reducing disruption to testing schedules and customer bookings.

For larger facilities, work can be phased to keep sections of the workshop operational throughout the installation programme.

FAQs

What Are The Dimension Requirements for a DVSA-compliant MOT Bay?

Dimension requirements vary according to the MOT class being tested. For example, a standard Class 4 bay requires a different layout from a Class 7 bay, which is designed to accommodate larger commercial vehicles.

A typical Class 7 bay is around 4.2 metres wide and 14 metres long, with larger clearance areas for brake testing, vehicle positioning, equipment and other such factors. Entrance and exit openings must also be sufficiently high and wide to accommodate commercial vehicles safely.

Each bay should be assessed individually to ensure the bay layout, floor markings and equipment positioning meet the operational requirements of the intended MOT class.

Can You Apply MOT Bay Floor Markings Over Old Workshop Floors?

Often yes, but oil contamination, worn coating and surface damage must be addressed first. We use shot blasting, grinding and degreasing to prepare the floor and ensure long-term adhesion.

How Much Does MOT Bay Line Marking Cost?

Cost depends on the number of bays, floor conditions, preparation requirements and layout complexity. Following a site assessment, we provide a fixed quotation outlining the recommended work.

How Long Do MOT Bay Floor Markings Last?

The lifespan of MOT bay floor markings depends on traffic levels, workshop conditions, cleaning practices and the material used. With proper preparation and high-performance MMA, epoxy or resin systems, materials can remain effective for many years.

Regular maintenance through our SuperLine® programme can help extend their lifespan even further by keeping markings visible and addressing wear before it becomes a larger issue. However, because DVSA expects MOT bay markings to remain clear and well-maintained, many workshops choose to refresh their floor markings every three to five years to maintain a professional, inspection-ready testing environment.
