Line Marking an Old Oily Floor
This project demonstrates how proper preparation transforms even the most contaminated floors and certainly presented a challenge when we were asked what to do about Line Marking an Old Oily Floor.
Our team carried out full mechanical shot blasting and grinding to remove oil, grease,
and existing coatings before applying a two-part epoxy paint system.
The result: clean, durable warehouse line marking built to last.
- Location: Industrial warehouse (manufacturing sector)
- Condition: Oily, contaminated concrete with failing coatings
- Preparation: Shot blasting and precision diamond grinding
- System Applied: Two-part epoxy paint with primer and clear sealer
- Objective: Create clean, long-lasting line markings resistant to oil and abrasion
Project Overview
The existing floor had years of oil build-up and worn coatings, causing poor adhesion and safety hazards.
Before applying new warehouse line markings, our team completely restored the surface —
removing all contaminants and mechanically keying the substrate to achieve optimal adhesion.
Step-by-Step Process
- Surface cleaning: Heavy degreasing and detergent scrubbing to remove surface oil and residue.
- Shot blasting & grinding: Full mechanical preparation to strip previous coatings and expose clean concrete.
- Vacuum & inspection: Dust extraction and surface testing to ensure the floor is dry and free from oil traces.
- Primer application: Penetrating epoxy primer to stabilise and seal the surface.
- Line marking paint: Two-part epoxy coating applied in high-visibility yellow and white.
- Protective sealer: Clear polyurethane topcoat for long-term protection against oil, impact, and traffic wear.
Results
After full preparation and application, the floor achieved a clean, high-bond surface with sharply defined markings.
The new system is resistant to forklift abrasion, chemical exposure, and ongoing oil contamination —
delivering a professional finish that improves both safety and site presentation.
Why This Method Works
- Mechanical keying: Ensures strong adhesion where chemical cleaning alone would fail.
- Two-part epoxy: Highly resistant to oil and heavy traffic, perfect for industrial floors.
- Primer + sealer: Locks in durability, prevents peeling, and simplifies future maintenance.
