Preparing your warehouse or factory floor properly is essential for achieving high-quality line markings. Two common techniques used for this purpose are shot blasting and diamond grinding. Shot blasting involves grinding down the floor surface by propelling small steel balls at high velocity onto the floor, while diamond grinding uses diamond-tipped blades to grind down the floor surface, creating a smooth, level profile. These methods play a crucial role in enhancing adhesion and ensuring the longevity of line markings.
In this article, we’ll delve into what shot blasting and diamond grinding entail, and how they contribute to effective factory and warehouse line marking solutions.

Preparing a warehouse floor for line marking is essential for several reasons. First and foremost, it enhances safety and workplace efficiency by allowing your line marking company to clearly define your walkways, loading zones, and designated areas, which in turn, helps prevent accidents and ensures compliance with safety regulations.
Additionally, proper floor preparation extends the longevity of your factory or warehouse line marking and enhances the overall appearance of your space, reflecting professionalism and attention to detail.
For this project specifically, we were tasked with removing some of Howdens’ existing blue walkways before painting them back in. In this case, the client wanted new walkways to be installed, however, as well as installing line marking, we also offer indoor line removal as a stand-alone service.
After clearing the space where the new lines were to be installed, we began by diamond grinding over the old and worn walkways. Typically, we would use diamond grinding for infilled walkway line marking as you can see in the video above. The reason we use this over a shot blaster is that we want to efficiently remove the existing line marking paint, and this does a really nice job of grinding the floor down to a level surface, lifting up the old walkways, and leaving us with a surface ready for us to apply the brand-new paint onto.
Arguably, you could also use a shot blaster for this, however, we know that our clients prefer for any disruption to their usual activity to be kept to a minimum, and diamond grinding gives an exceptional finish whilst also speeding up the preparation process.
Luckily, this warehouse didn’t have too much original line marking paint to remove, so after running the diamond grinder over the surface with a side-to-side as well as a forward motion we were able to clean up and move on to refining the edges with our shot blasters.
Once the bulk of the diamond grinding has been done it’s time to use our shot blasters to give us the finer edges. This is where selecting a line marking company with plenty of experience is really important, as ensuring precision at this stage will have a real impact on the overall finish and appearance of your warehouse line marking project.
After this, we clean down the floor and go over it again, looking out for any other areas where we’ve got high spots or blemishes that need to be removed.
What we’re looking for is a finish that looks just like the one in the video above – a really coarse finish. This coarse texture is vital because the rougher the finish, the easier it is for the paints to adhere to it. Once that’s done, then you can start getting your line marking paint down on the ground.

In the context of factory and warehouse floor maintenance, processes like shot blasting and diamond grinding play a crucial role in preparing surfaces for successful line marking and long-lasting paint application. These techniques are particularly effective when you need to remove existing paint, level uneven surfaces, and create optimal conditions for new paint adhesion. Here we discuss why these methods are essential and the specific advantages they offer:
Shot blasting and diamond grinding are indispensable for achieving a clean, level, and adequately roughened surface. Both processes are vital to a successful factory floor line marking installation and offer different benefits when it comes to ensuring optimal adherence of line marking paint.
Diamond Grinding: Typically, we would use this for infilled walkway line marking like you see in the video above. The reason we use diamond grinding over a shot blaster when refurbishing a factory floor with existing walkways, is that we want to lift up the old line marking paint. This method is great for covering larger areas and achieving a consistent profile across the floor.
Shot Blasting: Shot blasting is particularly effective for finer edges and perfectly complements diamond grinding by removing surface contaminants, coatings, and debris from your warehouse flooring.
Both shot blasting and diamond grinding create a textured, “coarse” finish that optimises the adherence of your line marking paint to your warehouse floor. Unlike smooth surfaces where paints struggle to bond effectively, a rough surface provides ample grip for the new paint, ensuring long-lasting adhesion and durability.
In addition to their technical benefits, shot blasting and diamond grinding expedite the overall floor restoration process allowing you to resume normal factory operations as soon as possible. These methods quickly and efficiently remove old paint, even out the floor and create a rough texture ready for painting which dramatically reduces the time and effort required for surface preparation.
This part of the preparation process helps to streamline the workflow, allowing for quick progress towards the application of new warehouse line markings. Ultimately this means you can resume normal working procedures in your factory or warehouse as soon as possible.
The combination of shot blasting and diamond grinding yields a high-quality finish that not only looks professional but also promises durability.
In the short term, effective warehouse line marking preparation methods achieve a uniform surface texture, ensuring consistent paint application and an aesthetically pleasing outcome.
In the long term, the improved adhesion minimises the likelihood of premature lifting or wear, resulting in a resilient and easy-to-maintain floor surface. Well-prepared surfaces by quality line marking companies contribute to the longevity of your line markings and floor coatings, translating to cost savings for your business.
In summary, incorporating shot blasting and diamond grinding into your factory or warehouse floor maintenance regimen is a strategic investment that pays dividends in terms of longevity, efficiency, and aesthetics. By hiring a line marking company that will properly utilise these techniques you can achieve optimal surface preparation, enhance paint adhesion, and ultimately transform your industrial floors into durable, visually impressive spaces that meet the demands of a busy working environment.
